Periods and Schedules.

1.- In which regular periods the PhD program opens a call for student candidates?

The IT PhD opens the call for PhD candidates one time each year, near to April or May and the selection process finish in the first week of July.

4.- What are the operative hours in the program?

The operative hours of this program are 9 to 17 hrs, compelling in this way the full time dedication for the program. Time zone: Central Standard Time of México.

5.- What are the usual time schedules for the PhD seminars?

The PhD seminars are usually imparted from 9 to 13 hrs. from monday to friday, however there are someones like the Workshops that are been scheduled from 16 to 19 hrs.

The PhD Seminars requires the presence of the student and usually they take no more than two weeks. In this way, during the semester the student is fully dedicated to their research thesis development. Time zone: Central Standard Time of México.

 

Scholarships and IT Phd Generalities

1.- How much should I pay each semester of the PhD?  

The amount of each semester is based in the minimum wage of the Guadalajaras´ metropolitan area. For example, todays amount of each semester in the PhD is near to $8, 743.00 mexican pesos for three seminars. That is the result of multipling 0.3 minimum wage of the Guadalajaras´ metropolitan area by credit. However, the each semester the student can submit a proposal to be eligible for a discount or fully exemption of payment. 

2.- Do I have the posibility to ask for a scholarship? What options do I have?  

Yes, you can ask for a scholarship. You can consider multiple options , but the one that the PhD students demands the most is the one of CONACYT that provides them around $9, 466.00 (Mexican pesos). However, the CONCYT scholarship requieres full time dedication and non more than 8 hours per week of extra activities. 

3.- Can I obtain a CONACYT scholarship, even do I’m a foreigner?

Of course you can. Once a candidate is accepted, if he covers all the requirements that CONACYT establishes, he can ask for a CONACYT scholarship if you are accepted in the PhD Program. The probability to get the scholarship is higher.  

4.- Once I’m a PhD student, in how many time is expected the accomplish of the program?  

The accomplish of the program should be in three years. Remember that you need before the thesis disertation to have at least one intenrnational recognized publication. 

5.- 5. What does mades this program special and different from others in the country?  

The IT PhD is special because a marketing research shows that it is the only one of its kind in the country. The results of that research was made in all the institutions of Mexico, and there is no other in the CONACYTs’ PNP registred in the area of informatic, computer or technology, besides there is the only program involved in the following three specialization areas: 

  • System Analysis, Design and Simulation.
  • Distributed Information System Architectures.
  • e-Business & Knowledge Management.

6.- Does the program can support part time sutdents, or only full time students?  

This program support only full time students, 8 hours daily from 9 hrs. to 17 hrs. because of the PNP CONACYT normativity. Even if in the creation manifest of the PhD, the part time is considerated, for the moment, we consider that we need more maturity tin the program to support this kind of modality in the future. 

 

Entry Requirements.

1.- What documentation must I include with my application?  

  • Master degree corresponding to the desired area of research.  
  • Curriculum Vitae (including the following sections: contact information, academic degrees, publications if it apply, experience in the desired area of research, experience in research projects, experience supporting scientific conferences or workshops).
  • Own a TOEFL with 550 pts or an IELTS with 5.5 mark, or an equivalent score (ask the coordination for equivalences.
  • Motivation letter.
  • Two academic recommendation letters.
  • Support letter from a professor of the program and a chosen or acknowledged project (see the catalog of thesis proposals). 
  • Student interview with the program committee in the acknowledged date.
  •  Medical certificate from the semester in course.

2.- Does the CV must be in english or could be in spanish? 

Your CV must be in english.

3.-3. How can I select a professor as my thesis director? How can I contact him?

The proffesors category will show you the IT PhD proffesors whom you can work with.

4.- f I have not choosen a professor from the program, can I start my PhD?  

You can´t. It is indispensable that you have chosen the professor who is going to be your thesis director. He will help you in the topic selection, andwill guide you all along the doctorate.  

5.- What does a motivational letter should include?  

The motivational letter should include the principal reasons of your interests in the IT PhD program, what makes you pick this decision, and what is your goal studying this program. The document must be written in english and should not be more than 2 pages and signed by the student candidate with a date reference. 

6.- Where can I study for the Basic Knowledge test based in the Computer Science GRE?

There are multiple guides that you can find in the web, however we can provide you a simple one that will show you in general terms the summary of the Basic knowledge Test.

7.- What is the EXANI III and what I need to apply it?

It`s a CENEVAL examination done by the mexican education ministry. There are specific dates to check in the ceneval web site and places to apply. The goal is to report the general status of skills in spanish language and mathematics analysis and reasoning. Also, the evaluation pretends to identify skills for research. In any case, the examination is mandatory to complete the process of admission for the PhD.

8.- What’s the difference between the Basic Knowledge test based in the Computer Science GRE and the EXANI III?

The principal difference between both of them is the subject, the Basic Knowledge test based in the Computer Science GRE is specifically designed to show the candidates knowledge in the Computer Science field. You can find many reference study guides in the web for this evaluation. The evaluation applied at the PhD is internal and not GRE official.
